Real Madrid suffered their first LaLiga defeat of the season after going down 3-1 to Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday evening.
Veteran duo Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez were recalled by Real and replaced Dani Carvajal and Aurelien Tchouameni respectively.
However, Atleti made a fast start with four minutes played after former Los Blancos striker Alvaro Morata found acres of space in the area and nodded in Samuel Lino's cross.
The visitors were on the back-foot again and left their city rivals extend the lead when a header from Antoine Griezmann nodded home a cross from Saul Niguez, giving Kepa Arrizabalaga no chance.
Real looked to hit back past the half-hour mark off a speculative strike outside the area by Eduardo Camavinga, but the effort took a deflection and hit the top of the net.
Los Blancos did though get one back just before the break when Toni Kroos dropped a shoulder from a tight angle around the area and fired in the near post.
The host managed to regroup despite the response from the visiting team and entered the break with the ascendancy in their stride.
Morata restored Atletico's two-goal cushion a minute after halftime when he rose unchallenged in the area and planted a powerful header beyond Kepa.
Atleti were on the front-foot again in search of a third which nearly came after Mario Hermoso's galloping header shaved the top of the woodwork moments apart.
Los Blancos started seeing a lot of the ball in forward areas and had shots from close-range by Rodrygo, substitute Camavinga and Jude Bellingham go wide.
Despite the continued pressure, Atleti were able to hold their own and claimed the maximum points to end Los Blancos' perfect run of results in the league.
