Stuttering Barcelona extend winless run

FC Barcelona failed to get back to winning ways in LaLiga after playing to a 1-1 draw against Valencia on Saturday evening.

After starting on the bench in the loss to Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League group stage dead-rubber, Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie De Jong, Pedri, Raphinha and Joao Felix were hauled back

Barca were under the gauge two minutes in and needed a one-hand stop from Inaki Pena to guide a low shot from Roman Yaremchuk behind for a corner-kick.

Xavi Hernandez's charges soon upped momentum in a lively opening and had a deep-lying set-play bring Alejandro Balde on strike, but the highly-rated youngster couldn't take flight.

Free-scoring Robert Lewandowski very nearly broke the deadlock in fine style when he executed an acrobatic volley from a cross that had Giorgi Mamardashvili to the near post to make a save.

Barca continued to push forward in the tenth minute of the second half and were ahead when Raphinha beat the offside trap to cutback for Felix to tap in comfortably.

Raphinha remained a lively force out wide where he time and again dropped a shoulder from the tightest angles to deliver balls which had Los Che scrambled to clear.

Los Che were level midway in the second half after Hugo Guillamon collected possession on the edge of the area and curled in the top corner, with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) dismissing any hint of an offside.

Felix, who got the breakthrough was substituted at the same time and saw former Manchester City striker Ferran Torres come on.

The latter nearly had an instant impact when he pulled to the near post of the six-yard box to draw a close-range save off Mamardashvili with a first-time shot.

Mamardashvili made another fierce stop ten minutes from time off Raphinha's one-on-one before a last-ditch clearance off the line from Yarek Gasiorowski thwarted the Brazilian too.

The two teams couldn't be separated despite the late push and were forced to take a point each from the contest.
