OFFICIAL: Greenwood's club issues statement over fan abuse

Mason Greenwood's new club Getafe has now issued a strong statement over the abuse he has received from opposition fans since moving to Spain.

The LALIGA has side strongly condemned the derogatory chants spectators hurl towards players on the pitch, with opposition fans having repeatedly shouted "Mason Greenwood, die!" during matches the 21-year-old has featured in so far this season.

This first time the shouts were heard came in his debut appearance against Osasuna, with what was supposed to be a memorable return to football following his parent club Manchester United's decision to suspend him after he was arrested on charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January 2022 turning into an ugly experience instead.

With the one-time England international's family members and friends also attending his first match for his new loan side, they bore witness to the horrible chants that were made towards the striker, and it was more of the same against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night this week as the same words were repeatedly shouted at Greenwood, who made his first start for the club in the 2-2 draw, providing an assist in the process.

With it understood that the Basque club could be punished for their fans' behaviour in that match, Getafe have released a strong statement condemning the verbal abuse that has been evident during their games this season.

"Getafe CF wants to express total disapproval of the derogatory and intolerant chants, especially serious insults, which have been occurring repeatedly during the LALIGA season and which damage the image and also the morale of our players and coaching staff," the club said in the statement, as per SportBible.

"Insulting chants, out of any civic context, aggravated with criticism that we respect as freedom of expression from a sporting point of view, but that we do not share when that critical current is attributed with derogatory epithets, insults and disrespect to the members of the staff and coaching staff of Getafe CF.

"Likewise, we ask for support, with their statements, among the participants that make up the passionate football world.

"The players and coaches of Getafe CF, as top-level professionals, participate in this spectacle and are aware of the media impact of playing in the best league in the world. But, beyond that, they are people with feelings, who have family and friends who suffer with them and deserve respect.

"Getafe CF has always been known for being a team that respects organisations, rivals and other members of the world of football.

"But, seeing the seriousness of the events, the time has come to raise our voice and defend the honour of our players and coaches. Getafe CF are against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport."
