Barca run riot over Real in Super Cup final

FC Barcelona secured the Spanish Super Cup with a 5-2 thrashing of rivals Real Madrid on Sunday evening.

Both sides were unchanged for the final with a piece of silverware on the line for the respective heavyweights of Spanish football.

Los Blancos were decisive on five minutes as a first-time pass from a break-away by Vinicius Junior released Kylian Mbappe to get in the area and make the breakthrough.

However, the Blaugrana levelled in the middle of the first period when Lamine Yamal latched onto Robert Lewandowski's through pass and drilled into the bottom corner.

Barcelona were soon forced to a substitution in the final quarter of the half as Inigo Martinez felt a sense of discomfort and was removed for Ronald Araujo.

The situation didn't affect matters when Lewandowski netted from the spot after the pitch-side monitor signalled a lunging foul by Eduardo Camavinga on Gavi.

Brazilian winger Raphinha added more misery under five minutes to the halftime with a potent header into the bottom corner from a cross-field ball to the back-post of the area.

The Blaugrana added a fourth goal on the stroke of the interval when a pacey counter saw Alejandro Balde come into the right of the area and finished with ease.

Los Blancos were inches to reducing the deficit a minute after the break through a first-time volley by Rodrigo right in the area, but the frame of the woodwork denied the Brazilian.

Raphinha's influence continued two minutes in the second half after he raced into the box to side-step two challengers and applied a comfortable finish to make it 5-1 on the night.

Barcelona's playing personnel were reduced ten minutes later as goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny raced out of his box and fouled Mbappe right on the area.

From the resultant free-kick, Los Blancos got a second when Rodrygo applied one step to see his curling shot go in off the inside post with substitute goalkeeper Inaki Pena beaten perfectly.

Real made a substitution inside the last passage of the clash as veteran midfielder Luka Modric came on for Aurelien Tchouameni.

Los Blancos continued to probe in the hope of a coming back through the trickery of Mbappe, but Pena was well alert and saw Barca marched onto the Super Cup.
