Real down Atleti in 8-goal thriller for Super Cup final spot

Real Madrid booked their spot in the Spanish Super Cup final after beating Atletico Madrid 5-3 in extra-time  on Wednesday evening.

Los Blancos made three changes following their win over Mallorca in LaLiga, as goalkeeper Kepa, Ferland Mendy and Nacho Fernandez were recalled. Atletico, meanwhile, were boosted by the return of Stefan Savic and Saul Niguez.

Diego Simeone's charges had a perfect start after Mario Hermoso gave them the lead in the first six minutes with a header from a delivery by Antoine Griezmann following a corner.

However, as the game opened up, Carlo Ancelotti's men levelled matters with 20 minutes on the clock after Antoinio Rudiger also powered home a header from Luka Modric's corner.

Los Blancos gained momentum and Mendy put them ahead on the half-hour mark with a shot into the bottom corner after Atletico conceded a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Simeone's men responded eight minutes before the interval, as Griezmann fired a strike from the edge of the box from a solo run.

Chances were few and far between from the break, as ten minutes into the second stanza Samuel Lino almost made it 3-2 for Atletico with a strike in the box that missed narrowly wide.

Ancelotti eventually made a change on 67 minutes, as Toni Kroos came on for Modric for fresh legs in midfield.

Los Blancos subsequently had a big chance with 19 minutes remaining after Dani Carvajal found himself near the goal from a free-kick but was denied from close-range by shot-stopper Jan Oblak.

Atletico eventually took the lead again in the last 12 minutes after Kepa could not deal with a cross in the six-yard box, as his save ricocheted off Rudiger and found the back of the net.

However, Ancelotti's troops had a fight in them as Carvajal levelled matters in the last five minutes with a cracker in the box from a rebound after Jude Bellingham's shot was cleared off the line.

Simeone's went for a different approach in attack in the start of extra-time as Angel Correa replaced Morata but Los Blancos dictated terms, although neither side could get a clear chance in the first 15 minutes of extra-time.

The Italian tactician required fresh legs for the final stretch in the second period of extra-time, as Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior made way for Joselu and Dani Ceballos, in a different attacking approach.

Joselu made an immediate impact, as he inspired the fourth goal for Los Blancos four minutes before time after his header at the near post came off Stefan Savic and deflected over Oblak.

Brahim Diaz put the result beyond doubt for Real in stoppage time as he made it 5-3 with a scorcher from range.
