Mbappe saves PSG's blushes with late winner

Paris Saint-Germain continued to sit pretty at the top of Ligue 1 after defeating Brest 2-1, with Kylian Mbappe netting a late winner on Saturday night.

Young Warren Zaire-Emery made a comeback to PSG's eleven following their UEFA Champions League exit and Lionel Messi as well as Kylian Mbappe led the line alongside Carlos Soler.

Messi got stuck in the thick of things four minutes in as he flicked a ball in-behind for Mbappe to go clear, but the Frenchman's effort didn't roll in and went wide.

PSG piled more numbers forward after the opening exchanges and had a half-volley by Soler from a dinked ball by Messi tipped onto the crossbar by Marco Bizot.

The host began to probe chances following a quiet start, but sound defending from veteran defender Sergio Ramos kept them at bay.

Soler allayed the home side's charge seven minutes ahead of halftime when he pounced on a loose ball from Mbappe's long-range drive and fired in off the underside of the crossbar.

Brest were behind for just five minutes after a long ball from Romain Del Castillo met Franck Honorat who beat Ramos to apply a superb finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma and made it 1-1.

No substitutions were instituted by either bench upon the beginning of the second period, but preferred to stick with the tried and tested from the first spell.

Messi very nearly revived the visitors ten minutes from the break with a half-volley from a decent area off a ball by Nuno Mendes, but the Argentine legend went wide.

Mendes went through himself in the closing 20 minutes when he picked up Mbappe's through-ball and drew a cutback to see Bizot parry his close-range strike.

A double substitution from the host came within the final minutes, as Vitinha replaced Fabian Ruiz before Juan Bernat entered for Timothee Pembele.

PSG kept plugging away and grabbed the winner at the death when Messi played in Mbappe to go and round Bizot before applying a telling finish to send his side 11 points clear at the top.
