Messi rescues victory for PSG with late stunner

A stoppage-time stunner from Lionel Messi guided Paris Saint-Germain to a 4-3 victory over LOSC Lille in Ligue 1 on Sunday afternoon.

The host welcomed back Kylian Mbappe to the starting eleven as he started their loss to Bayern Munich on the bench in midweek with Lionel Messi and Neymar Junior partnering the Frenchman up top.

Early fears for the host were put to bed 11 minutes in when Mbappe brought a through pass from Neymar under control and faced two defenders before he dispatched past goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Three minutes from the deadlock being broken, the visiting team were forced into a substitution after defender Jose Fonte struggled to carry on and was replaced by Leny Yoro.

PSG used this to their effect and grabbed a second a few minutes later when Neymar rushed onto a spill by Chevalier off a shot by Vitinha and finished off comfortably.

Fortunately, the 2020/21 champions worked out a glimmer of hope midway in the first half after Bafode Diakite rose on the end of Andre Gomes' corner to head in the bottom-corner.

The host lost a defensive figure too on the half-hour mark after Nuno Mendes couldn't carry owing to a coming-together and had Juan Bernat take his fullback slot.

PSG conceded a penalty 12 minutes inside the resumption as Marco Verratti pulled down Tiago Djalo in the area, and Jonathan David stepped up to send Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way.

With their tails up, Lille went ahead in the last 20 minutes when Gomes pinged a long ball in behind for Jonathan Bamba to latch onto and blast beyond the reach of Donnarumma.

A trio of changes from PSG minutes later with the aim of drawing level happened, as Warren Zaire-Emery, Carlos Soler and Danilo Pereira came on.

PSG rescued a point from the brink of defeat three minutes before time when Mbappe stretched onto Bernat's pass to poke beyond Chevalier.

The host did have the final say after Messi curled in the top corner following a free-kick deep in stoppage time and brought his side back to winning ways.
