Ligue 1 match report Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique Marseille

Paris Saint-Germain lost their second match on the bounce after a 1-0 loss to Olympique Marseille in a heated affair that saw five players sent off.

PSG welcomed back some of their star players who tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of their opening loss against newly-promoted Lens, notably Neymar and Angel Di Maria while Kylian Mbappe, Marquinhos and Mauro Icardi remained sidelined.

The hosts almost grabbed an early lead in just the second minute as goalkeeper Steve Mandanda kept out Di Maria's shot on the line, with Thomas Tuchel's men looking to bounce back from Thursday's shock loss.

Marseille drew first blood on the half-hour mark after Florian Thauvin swept home a volley at the near post from a delightful cross by Dimitri Payet.

The game was opening up in the closing phase of the first stanza but Thomas Tuchel's charges lacked their usual cutting edge in the final third and went to the break trailing by an odd goal.

The Parisians came back fired up from the break as Mandanda kept Andre Villas-Boas' men in the game with back-to-back saves to deny Pablo Sarabia and Neymar towards the hour-mark.

Di Maria thought he had levelled matters for the hosts in the 62nd minute after curling home a beautiful strike from Gueye's through ball but the goal was disallowed for offside while Dario Benedetto's goal for Marseille at the other ebd was also chalked off for offside.

Villas-Boas refreshed his team in the last 13 minutes with a double change, as Valere Germain came on for goalscorer Thauvin and Nemanja Radonjic replaced Payet.

Marseille were compact at the back in the dying minutes, not allowing PSG spaces in the dangerous areas and there was late drama in stoppage time, as the hosts had three players sent off while the visitors had two players dismissed.

Layvin Kurzawa, Leandro Peredes and Neymar were the players sent off for PSG, as the match got ugly, with reckless tackles and skirmishes while Marseille's Jordan Amavi and Benedetto also got sent off for their trouble, as PSG lost their second consecutive league game while Marseille won their second in a row.
