OFFICIAL: Arsenal icon takes charge of Mothiba's Strasbourg

An Arsenal legend has been confirmed as Lebo Mothiba's next manager at Strasbourg.

The French club has appointed Patrick Vieira as their new boss just four months after he parted ways with Premier League side Crystal Palace.

With the 47-year-old having penned a three-year contract with the Ligue 1 club, his appointment comes little more than a week after Chelsea's owners agreed to purchase a majority stake in the French team as part of their multi-club ownership model.

Vieira, who was captain of Arsenal's famous Invincibles side that went undefeated in the 2003/04 EPL campaign, replaces Frederic Antonetti after Strabourg finished 15th in the French top flight last season, with the latter said to have agreed to step down from the role after Chelsea confirmed their investment.

"I am particularly happy to join Racing," Vieira said, per Strasbourg's official Twitter account.

"I know the history and the identity of this club, the fervour it arouses, the importance it has for its region, which is a place of football and passion.

"The rebuilding of the club in recent years, under the direction of Marc Keller [Strasbourg's president], is an example to be admired. Working with him is a real pleasure for me.

"Today, a new cycle begins for Racing and it is exciting as a coach to be able to build something while relying on the values that have defined the strength of the club."

Mothiba, meanwhile, will be hoping his fortunes at Strasbourg improve under Vieira in the coming campaign after enduring a miserable 2022/23 season in which he registered just three goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances.

With the Bafana Bafana striker having just one season remaining on his contract with the club, he will likely be looking to impress his new manager in his sixth campaign with the team.
