PSG 'make sudden decisions' on Messi & Ramos

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly made sudden decisions over the futures of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos.

With both Messi and Ramos out of contract end the end of the season, the French giants are believed to have been hard at work trying to negotiate new deals for the players.

The duo are on high-paying contracts, with the Argentine said to be earning a whopping £34 million (R744 million) for the 2022/23 campaign alone.

It is now reported that despite the club's clear intentions to retain both stars, they now face a serious dilemma in the their quest to do so.

According to L'Equipe, PSG have decided to put contracts talks for Messi and Ramos on hold due to the imminent threat of Financial Fair Play (FFP) sanctions.

The Ligue 1 outfit were one of 10 teams who were fined for breaching UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations for the 2020/21 season and have since paid out a €10 million (R193 million) fine, while a further €45 million (R872 million) was suspended pending future accounts, with further sanctions possible.

The threat of sanctions could have a massive bearing on Messi and Ramos signing contract extensions, with suggestions that the latter may be forced to take a wage reduction if he wants to remain at the Parc des Princes.

It is said that the Qatari-owned side have been posting record fiscal loses in recent years, with their latest accounts showing a staggering shortfall of €370 million (R7.1 million).

Possible sanctions are said to include player registration restrictions, as the club could be barred from getting new signings in their European squad for 2023/24, while they could also see the team for the competition reduced from 25 to 23 men.

According to Diaro AS, they could also be expelled from UEFA tournaments entirely and that could happen as soon as the 2024/25 campaign as a result of sustained losses in that period.

PSG now need to cut their wage bill drastically and this may mean that deals for Messi and Ramos may no longer be feasible.
