Antony responds to Man Utd decision

Manchester United star Antony has broken his silence on the decision taken by his club after he was accused of domestic abuse.

The winger is being investigated after allegations made by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, who has accused the 23-year-old of attacking her in a number of instances dating back to 2022, while another two women have since made similar claims.

On Sunday, United released a statement confirming that Antony's return to the club will be delayed while investigations continue.

"Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony," it read.

"Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.

"As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse."

The Brazil international, who was dropped from the latest Selecao squad after the accusations emerged, has since issued a statement in response, via his social media channels.

"I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me," he wrote.

"This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.

"I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully co-operate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible."

The 23-year-old had previously appeared on a Brazilian television show to respond to the allegations made by his ex-girlfriend.

"I am 100% sure that I have never touched a woman," he said on the Fofocalizando show.

"And I will come with the proof. People will see the truth.

"I have never attacked and I never will attack. I'm sure I never committed physical violence.

"Verbal violence... I offended her [Cavallin] and she offended me too. It was on both sides.

"Physical violence, never."

In response, the Brazilian's ex-girlfriend took to social media to share a statement from her lawyers.

"Gabriela Cavallin's defence, in view of the facts and evidence that became public knowledge on this date, regarding the repeated episodes of aggression suffered by her, informs that she trusts in the serious and competent investigation of the Civil Police of Sao Paulo, and equally of the Police of Manchester/UK, and hopes that, once completed, the aggressor will be prosecuted and punished for the crimes he committed," it read.
