Ten Hag slams Man Utd stars & himself after disappointing draw

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has slammed both himself and his players following their disappointing draw in Europe.

The Red Devils hosted Dutch outfit FC Twente in their first UEFA Europa League encounter of the 2024/25 campaign, with the game ending all square at 1-1.

Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for the home side in the 35th minute, but the Premier League side struggled to put the game to bed and, as a result, Sam Lammers found the equaliser for his team in the 68th minute.

The English outfit had 57% of the possession on the night, and recorded 19 shots on goal, of which five were on target, while Twente took only seven shots, hitting the target on just three occasions.

According to Ten Hag, his players should have been more clinical in order to kill the game off at an earlier stage.

"It was the game of their [Twente's] life, they fought for every yard, and we didn't. 99% is not enough, you have to give 100%," the United manager said, per journalist Laurie Whitwell.

"You have to kill the game, finish it off, we are leading 1-0, but you have to go for the second goal, then you kill the game.

"... I can offer mentality is very good from this team. I saw in many games how high our work rate is, but today I have some criticism.

"It is not only the team, I have to look in the mirror as well. I am part of it.

"We have to be more clinical in such situations."

In the build-up to the equaliser, Twente right-back Bart van Rooij carried the ball from deep inside his own half, dribbling through a number of United defenders before new United signing Manuel Ugarte intervened.

However, the Tukkers had committed men forward, and Eriksen was caught on the ball by Lammers, who went through on goal and beat Andre Onana at his near post.

"We can't allow them a situation like the equaliser. Their right-back dribbling through the whole midfield without being stopped," Ten Hag added.

After two consecutive draws, the 54-year-old will be hoping his team can collect all three points when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.
