Ex-Man Utd star: Why Ronaldo should go to Saudi Arabia

With reports suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo's next move is all but done, a former Manchester United star has explained why the Portuguese superstar should make the lucrative switch to the Saudi Arabian top flight.

Ronaldo's next destination remains unknown following his sudden departure from Old Trafford in November, although reports across Europe earlier on Monday suggested that the player's next move is now close to completion.

The 37-year-old has been the subject of keen interest from the Middle East, with Spanish outlet Marca reporting last week that Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nassr has made the player a gigantic offer worth £433 million (R8.8 billion), while journalist Fabrizio Romano also claimed that another "crazy" offer is on the table from Al Hilal.

While it now appears Ronaldo will be joining Al Nassr in January, former Red Devils striker Odion Ighalo, who plays for Al Hilal, has explained why he believes the Portugal captain's arrival in the country would be beneficial to the Saudi Pro League.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is hugely ambitious, and I think he will want to play in a Champions League team and end his career well, but you never can say," the Nigerian told The Athletic.

"He has the decision to make. I wish him all the best in that decision, and hopefully, he does come to Saudi Arabia.

"I would love for him to come to Saudi because he would boost the league and add more fanbase to the league.

"People who aren't already watching will start to engage with the league and see something they are missing."

The Nigeria international, who spent one year at Old Trafford, joined Al Hilal in January from Al Shabab. He is among a growing list of notable names who have joined the league over the past three seasons, including former Sevilla playmaker Ever Banega, ex-Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina, and Cameroon talisman Vincent Aboubakar.
