Man Utd open to Greenwood's return in future?

With Mason Greenwood having recently joined Olympique Marseille on a permanent deal, Manchester United have reportedly provided a possible way back to Old Trafford in the future for the player.

Last week, Greenwood signed a five-year contract with Marseille, in a deal worth €26 million (R517 million), as per Transfermarkt.

The move seemingly signalled the end of the road in Manchester for the controversial star after he was embroiled in an assault and rape case that eventually prompted his loan move to Getafe from United last season.

Greenwood was linked with an array of clubs in Turkey, Italy, and Spain earlier in this window, but ultimately chose a switch to France, where opinions regarding his arrival are reportedly divided.

While the 22-year-old has begun training with his new club, a stunning new report suggest that his story with the Red Devils may not be entirely over.

According to The Telegraph, United included a buyback clause in the deal that saw Greenwood move to Marseille.

Moreover, the club also agreed a 50% sell-on clause, which would see them receive half of the fee if the Ligue 1 outfit sold the forward to another team in the future.

However, it is further claimed that, as things stand, it is not likely the Red Devils will welcome the forward back to the Theatre of dreams as a first-team player, but the opportunity is seemingly in place if they ever changed their mind.

Although the attacker is no longer a United player, his move to France continues to draw controversy, with the Manchester club having been urged to donate the transfer fee they banked from his sale to the Ligue 1 side to charity by domestic abuse activist David Challen.

"Man Utd's a massive global sports club that rakes in hundreds of millions a year and that they didn't release a player – which they could have done quite easily – and chose to retain him for their own financial needs, really prioritises the financial needs of the company above women," Challen told iNews UK.

"It seems to be a phase of the vision of what's happening at Man Utd anyway. It's a disturbing insight into the culture at Man Utd and how they are treating women, pushing them quite literally to the side and the periphery of the club.

"He [Sir Jim Ratcliffe] cares about success on the pitch for the men's team, but the women won a major trophy [the FA Cup] and he wasn't even there."
