Man Utd to make 1 of 3 big calls on Greenwood

Manchester United are reportedly set to make one of three big calls on Mason Greenwood's future at Old Trafford.

Charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour against the Englishman were dropped on 3 February, little over a year since he was arrested and charged in January 2022.

It is understood that this came after key witnesses withdrew from the case, with United being swift in putting out a statement confirming they would conduct an internal investigation of their own before making a final decision on the matter, while the forward would not be allowed to return to training in the interim.

According to the Daily Star, the 21-year-old is not expected to play for the club for the remainder of this season as senior club officials consider a solution to the situation.

The reports suggests that United executives are now looking at three possible courses of action regarding Greenwood, with one of them being to allow him to return to training at Carrington even though the squad is said to be divided on the idea of him being reintegrated to the team.

Another alternative the board is reportedly exploring is to offer him a payout for the remainder of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams, which is set to expire in June 2025, in a bid to have him leave the club.

The third option the Red Devils are weighing up is to sell the marksman in the next transfer window, a move that would get his sizeable salary, thought to be nearly £100 000 (R2.1 million) a week, off the books. Clubs in China have already been mooted as a possible destination.

United are said to be wary about rushing into a decision on the matter and are reportedly set to interview Greenwood in order to assess his mental and physical condition after the player went more than a year without playing football.
