Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed that Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, with the player making his first court appearance on Monday.
The 21-year-old was arrested in January this year after a young woman made allegations online claiming that the player had attempted to sexually assault her, among other things.

The Englishman was granted bail and remained outside of prison until last Saturday after he was found to have breached his bail conditions, and prosecutors decided to charge him.
"Greater Manchester Police has charged and remanded a 21-year-old man with controlling and coercive behaviour, attempted rape and Section 47 assault of a woman," the GMP told CNN in a statement.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Janet Potter said in an earlier statement: "Specialist rape prosecutors from Crown Prosecution Service North West's complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police."
On Monday, Greenwood attended his first hearing at the Manchester Magistrates' Court, where details of the charges against him were read out in court while his family and friends were present in the public gallery, according to Sky Sports.
It is said the attempted rape occurred in October 2021, the assault happened in December last year, while the controlling and coercive behaviour took place between November 2018 and October this year.
