Ronaldo transfer latest: Medical 'booked'

More than a month after leaving Manchester United, reports suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to complete a medical for his next club this week.

Ronaldo abruptly left Old Trafford in November after publicly slating United and its owners during a television interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan.

His then-contract was supposed to come to an end in June 2023, but it was terminated by mutual consent in the aftermath of the show.

Since then, the 37-year-old has been looking a new club ahead of the January transfer window, although it is understood he has received little interest from teams in Europe, where he would ideally like to continue playing.

For several weeks, Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nassr have been widely considered the favourites to get his signature, having made a huge £173 million (R3.5 billion) offer to sign the free agent.

According to the Daily Mirror, the move is now set to take a major step forward, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said to be set undergo a medical for the Gulf club this week.

It is reported that his agent Jorge Mendes has been unsuccessful in his attempts to get the former Real Madrid talisman a transfer in Europe, thus forcing Ronaldo to look elsewhere.

The Saudi side is believed to be confident they will get the deal over the line, and have already booked accommodation for the former Juventus marksman and his advisors.

The report also states they are keen to announce the transfer at the beginning of January, with the broad terms of his proposed contract have already been agreed.

The veteran forward will pocket a hefty £830 000 (R17.1 million) per week if he completes the transfer, while he would also be expected to earn a substantial amount in image rights deals.

It is further claimed that he would also be given a role in the Middle Eastern country's bid for the 2030 World Cup and have a prominent position in the running of Al Nassr, including the appointment of managers.

Interestingly, though, Al Nassr president Musli Al-Muammar has played down news regarding the move being imminent in recent days, labelling reports from Spain suggesting the deal is done as "mostly a lie", according to the Daily Mail.
