The Manchester outfit had reportedly offered De Gea a new deal, but opted to withdraw in the latter parts of the season, making the Spaniard a free agent.
The club then opted to break the bank for Cameroon international Andre Onana from Inter Milan in a deal reportedly worth €50 million.
However, the Independent have reported that Man Utd chiefs wanted to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who played a big role in Argentina's World Cup success in Qatar last year.
The report claims Ten Hag blocked the club from making an official approach for the World Cup winner as he preferred a move for Onana.
Ten Hag and Onana had previously worked together at Ajax Amsterdam, which was one of the key reasons for the goalkeeper's arrival at Old Trafford.
While it has not been smooth sailing in the early parts of the season, Onana kept his sixth clean sheet on Saturday as the Red Devils defeated Luton Town 1-0.
