Why €85m Man Utd star was left out of training camp

Manchester United have confirmed why a player they paid €85 million (R1.5 billion) for has been left out of their squad for their mid-season training camp in Spain.

The Manchester club is heading to the Iberian nation ahead of their friendlies against Cadiz on Wednesday and Real Betis on Saturday in preparation for the return of club football.

However, United have confirmed that Jadon Sancho, who was bought from Borussia Dortmund for €85 million (R1.5 billion) in 2021, will not be joining the team in Spain.

The Premier League side has revealed that the 22-year-old will continue with individual training in the Netherlands instead, at the recommendation of manager Erik ten Hag, per ESPN.

"Jadon Sancho is continuing his individual training programme as part of a process to get back to his highest level," a statement on the club's official website.

"The club is fully supporting him in this."

Sancho has failed to replicate the form he showed at Dortmund after a stuttering first season at United that saw him score only five goals and make three assists in 38 matches in all competitions.

The winger has not played since a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in October due to what was then reported as an illness.

In recent weeks, Sancho has deactivated his social media accounts, with the footballer appearing to be fully focused on getting back to his best following his omission from England's 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

A number of other senior players, such as David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial, were included in the training camp squad, though.
