15-game ban coming? FIFA charge South American quartet after WC referee altercation

FIFA has reportedly charged four players following an altercation with a referee at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez could face a 15-game ban for appearing to elbow an assistant referee following their win over Ghana on Friday evening, a result that still confirmed their exit from the tournament.

It is said the Atletico Madrid player was also caught on camera using expletives to described the match officials' display in the match.

At the end of that match, the South American side's bench erupted and proceeded to bombard the referee Daniel Siebert in protest of his decision to not award penalties for challenges on Darwin Nunez and Edinson Cavani in the dying minutes of the game.

Another goal would have sent the South American nation into the round of 16 in place of South Korea.

The world football governing body has now charged four Uruguay players for angrily confronting the referee following that 2-0 win over Ghana.

"Separate proceedings were opened against Uruguayan players Gimenez, Cavani, Muslera and Godin," FIFA said in a statement.

With disciplinary proceedings having now started, all eyes will be on FIFA's final decision regarding Gimenez's actions, with the centre-back reportedly in danger of facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Striker Suarez, meanwhile, has been deemed lucky by some to have escaped without punishment after the former Liverpool striker claimed that "FIFA is against us" after the match.

FIFA has also opened proceedings against the Uruguayan Football Association over potential breaches of fair play rules.
