Argentina & Netherlands in hot water with FIFA after ill-tempered clash?

Argentina and the Netherlands are reportedly in hot water with FIFA following their bad-tempered World Cup quarter-final clash on the weekend.

It was the Albiceleste who walked away with the victory over the Netherlands when the two sides met in their feisty quarter-final on Friday night.

A World Cup-record 18 yellow cards were shown as the South American giants secured a 4-3 win via penalties after a 2-2 stalemate in the first 120 minutes of the tie.

At one point during the match, the Albiceleste's Leandro Paredes kicked the ball at the Netherlands bench from a few metres away, with Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk knocking the midfielder to the ground in the melee that ensued.

After Lautaro Martinez scored the winning penalty in the shootout, tensions once again boiled over as the two teams clashed as they walked off the pitch and into the tunnel, with Oranje fullback Denzel Dumfries also receiving a red card during the penalty showdown after receiving two yellows in quick succession.

FIFA's disciplinary committee has now confirmed that an investigation into both teams' conduct has been launched after reviewing referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz's match report.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) and 16 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code," a statement from the organisation read, per the Daily Mail.

"Additionally, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association due to potential breaches of article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the same match."

Team misconduct charges are usually reserved for sides that collect five yellow cards in a match, so FIFA is expected to hit both teams with fines, although the Albiceleste will likely receive a bigger sanction for their separate disorder charge.
