Former Portugal star Fabio Coentrao retired from professional football in July 2021 at the age of 33.

In 2011, the defender joined Real from Benfica in a deal worth €30 million (R609 million), and he would go on to spend seven years at the club, although he was sent out on several loan moves during that period.

The fullback won 11 trophies at the Santiago Bernabeu, including two UEFA Champions League titles, and made more than a century of appearances at left-back for the Madrid giants.

Following his departure from Los Blancos, he returned to boyhood club Rio Ave in Portugal, but after taking a one-year career break, he decided to hang up his boots permanently in favour of a rather unusual endeavour.

Coentrao has now revealed that during his time at Real he bought a boat because his father was big lover of the ocean, and he would later decide to become a fisherman himself after retiring at 33.

"The roots have been here since I was born," Coentrao said, according to The Sun.

"My father always had a boat, he was really into fishing. I used to go a lot with my father. I liked it very much.

"Whenever I had that bit of time off, whenever I was on holiday, my life was... it was the sea, it was fishing.

"And of course I knew that one day football would end, I would have to take another direction in my life.

"My happiness is this land, the sea. And obviously that being so, I want to lead this life."
