Modric 'makes decision' on international future

Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who has been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia, has now reportedly made a big decision on his international future.

The veteran midfielder suffered yet another huge disappointment with his national team when they were beaten by Spain on penalties in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday night.

The defeat marked the third time the nation has achieved a podium finish in an international tournament in five years, after they finished as runners-up at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and third at the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Aged 37 with 166 caps for Croatia, many are beginning to wonder when the playmaker will call time on his international career given that he made his debut all the way back in March 2006.

Asked about his future after the UNL final on Sunday, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner indicated that his mind has been made up about whether or not he will carry on, but refused to say more.

"My future with the national team? I have decided my future, I am clear about it but I'm not going to say it today," the Los Blancos legend said, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Having taken silver and bronze in the previous two World Cups, Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic remained positive about his side's performances at major tournaments in recent years.

"We have won medals, one after the other, which is a really great thing," Dalic told reporters.

"Three medals for Croatia is great to have achieved, it shows that Croatia has lots of potential. We are disappointed with the loss, but we should be proud of what we did."

Speaking on Modric's seemingly uncertain future with the national team, Dalic added: "Luka said he would take his own decision after the tournament, that is fair.

"He played great, we would love Luka to stay, he is a great player and I hope he will stay with us for a long time."

At club level, the Real stalwart will be out of contract at the end of the month, with neither the club nor the player having issued an update, although the former Tottenham Hotspur star has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

According to reports, though, Modric and midfield partner Toni Kroos are set to sign one-year contract extensions at the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of next season.
