With the 2023/24 domestic season in Europe's top five leagues coming to an end over the next couple of weeks, there is now a growing anticipation for the international tournament, with the likes of France, Hungary, Netherlands, and Ukraine having announced their final and provisional squads.
Unfortunately, some players have already been ruled out of the competition due to injury, including Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry (Germany), Paris Saint-Germain defender Lucas Hernandez (France), Tottenham Hotspur fullback Destiny Udogie (Italy), and Real Madrid star David Alaba (Austria).
However, Alaba, who suffered a torn cruciate ligament in December, has now been asked to join Austria's coaching team at the Euros by manager Ralf Rangnick, as per Spanish newspaper Relevo.
It is claimed the former Bayern Munich star is delighted by the request and wants to take up the assistant coach position for the showpiece.
The 31-year-old will not be fit in time to play at the competition, with Transfermarkt indicating that his return date from injury is the end of July.
The versatile star is the current captain of Austria as well as the second most capped player (105 appearances) behind striker Marko Arnautovic, who is on 111 matches for his country.
Austria are in Group D alongside France, Netherlands, and Poland. According to UEFA, the side has never progressed beyond the round of 16 at the Euros, but Alaba has played seven matches at the tournament, the joint-most along with Martin Hinteregger and Marcel Sabitzer.
