Serie A match report Napoli v Inter Milan 19 May 2019

Inter Milan's top-four hopes suffered a blow after a 4-1 loss to second-place Napoli in a Serie A clash on Sunday evening.

Lautaro Martinez, Danilo Dambrosio, Roberto Gagliardini and Marcelo Brozovic returned for Inter, with Orestis Karnezis, Raul Albiol, Faouzi Ghoulam, Fabian Ruiz, Dries Mertens and Arkadiusz Milik starting for Napoli.

Inter were behind on 15 minutes after Piotr Zielinski teed off poor possession from Radja Nainggolan to drill into the roof of the net.

Napoli closed in on a second on 21 minutes with a low curling shot from Mertens, but Samir Handanovic went down for the save.

Inter rallied on from the slow start with the first shot on target through Martinez on 35 minutes, which Karnezis tripped back into play.

Following the second half, Inter transformed their attack with the introduction of Mauro Icardi who teamed up with Martinez up front.

The Nerazzurri started brightly and made lots of forays into the offensive area, but the hosts were up a notch on 61 minutes as Mertens barged into the area to head home Jose Callejon's cross.

Inter nearly halved the deficit with a low curler from Dambrosio, but Karnezis saved for a corner three minutes later.

The visitors followed up their pursuit with a powerful shot inside the area from Martinez on 68 minutes, but Kalidou Koulibaly cleared off the goal-line.

Napoli put the tie beyond doubt when Ruiz plucked home a square pass on 71 minutes after poor defending from Inter.

Amidst the score-line, Inter kept probing for a breakthrough and were denied by the top of the crossbar on 73 minutes following a snap shot from Martinez.

Napoli continued the onslaught on 78 minutes, as Ruiz notched up his double with a powerful shot from the near side.

Inter were given a penalty two minutes later for a foul on Icardi, which the Argentine converted to reduce the deficit.

But there was no major turnaround, as Napoli derail Inter's top-four hopes ahead of the final day next weekend.
