Serie A match report Parma v Juventus

Champions Juventus opened their Serie A campaign with a 1-0 win over Parma on Saturday evening.

Juve were keen for a bright start to the defence of their title, as Cristiano Ronaldo headlined a promising attack although the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Mathjis de Ligt did not start.

After a few half-chances from both sides, Juve took the lead after 21 minutes as Giorgio Chiellini flicked home inside the six yard area.

Ronaldo found a chance to put the Old Lady further added after 28 minutes, but the Portuguese-born shot across the face of goal.

From the same angle, Ronaldo side-stepped Douglas Costa's pass to find the bottom corner but a Video Assistant Review ruled out the strike after 34 minutes.

Parma struggled to contain Juve's dominance despite a few breaks and half-opening as the half drew to a close.

Juve started on a slow note in the second half, as Parma attempted a response following an inconsistent first spell.

Parma introduced the evening's first change on 57 minutes, with Luca Siligardi coming on for Dejan Kulusevski.

The champions regained momentum on 65 minutes as Ronaldo brought the best out of Luigi Sepe who came off his line to thwart the Portuguese superstar.

The visitors pulled out all the stops for a second in the final minutes as Juan Cuadrado replaced Costa in attack.

Ronaldo kept pushing for his first of the season three minutes later, but Sepe leaned down to smother his near post strike.

Parma closed in to a point in the opening minute of added time, but the visitors eroded all their threats for an opening day win.
