Serie A match report Udinese v Juventus 22 August 2021

Juventus squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Udinese in their Serie A opener on Sunday evening.

The Bianconeri named star man Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for 'technical reasons' in Massimiliano Allegri's first outing back in the reigns.

Three minutes was all it took Juve to go ahead after Paulo Dybala applied a smart close-range finish from a clever ball into the Argentinian's path by Rodrigo Bentancur.

Udinese weren't out of the woods midway in the first half and conceded a second when Dybala turned provider to Juan Cuadrado who drilled the diminutive player's ball into the bottom-corner.

A dominant first spell from the Old Lady appeared to go up a notch in the dying stages as Alvaro Morata worked beyond a scuffle in the area to fire a left-footed shot into the side-netting.

With no substitutions at the break, Udinese pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when Roberto Pereyra directed Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way after the latter had upended Tolgay Arslan.

The Old Lady came inches close to re-establish their two-goal advantage after Morata headed a cross from the left-side by Alex Sandro against the face of the post.

That was the Spaniard's last meaningful contribution as he made way for Ronaldo towards the closing period, with Dejan Kulusevski introduced as well ahead of Federico Bernardeschi.

Ronaldo immediately sprung into the thick of things after he headed a ball in a promising area from Dybala wide of the far post.

Udinese began to grow in confidence and with that levelled with six minutes to go when Gerard Deulofeu pounced on a defensive error by Szczesny to slot in from close-range.

The Bianconeri appeared to have netted the winner deep in added time through a fine header at the back-post by Ronaldo, but it was chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following an offside, as it ended all square.
