Bayern punish struggling Man Utd in UCL opener

Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United

Manchester United's first match back in the UEFA Champions League ended with a 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.

A goalkeeping error from United's Andre Onana presented the host to chance to make the breakthrough after failing to keep out Leroy Sane's strike.

Bayern doubled their lead around the half-hour mark with a clever finish from Serge Gnabry and left United with a mountain to climb.

Danish international Rasmus Hojlund, who joined in the off-season from Atalanta, opened his account for United shortly after halftime in his debut match in the competition.

However, the Bavarian restored their two-goal cushion as Harry Kane thumped in from the penalty spot as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) flagged a hand on Christian Eriksen.

United bagged a second goal in the final minutes courtesy of Carlos Casemiro after the host went to sleep, but the Bavarians grabbed a fourth with a delightful close-range finish from young Mathys Tel.

The Red Devils managed to get a third with the final kick of the game through Casemiro, who tucked in a free-kick but the Bavarians ended up with the victory.

Arsenal 4-0 PSV Eindhoven

Arsenal's return to the Champions League got off on the right footing after they crushed PSV Eindhoven 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium in Group B.

Bukayo Saka got the host off the mark with his first goal in the competition for the club before Leandro Trossard stepped in to make it 2-0 with over 20 minutes played.

Gabriel Jesus added a third goal a little to halftime with a well-worked finish and left the Eredivisie boys on the back-foot.

The Gunners weren't done and compounded the visitors' woes when captain Martin Odegaard applied a tremendous finish to draw the game to a close.

Real Madrid 1-0 Union Berlin

Real Madrid left it late to secure a 1-0 win over Union Berlin in their Group C opener on Wednesday evening.

The game seemed destined for a draw until Jude Bellingham netted the winning goal in the 94th minute.

Bellingham has now scored six goals in six appearance for Los Blancos this season.

SL Benfica 0-2 Salzburg

A ten-men SL Benfica started their campaign in Group D in disappointing fashion following a 2-0 loss to Salzburg.

Salzburg were given a chance to go ahead on three minutes through a spot-kick following a foul by Anatolii Trubin, but Karim Konate missed

The visitors got another penalty on 13 minutes after Antonio Silva dismissed handled on the goal-line and saw Roko Simic converting the spot-kick.

Benfica failed to stage a comeback following the break and instead left the visitors to go two goals up courtesy of Oscar Gloukh, as the contest drew to a close.

Real Sociedad 1-1 Inter Milan

Last season's beaten finalists Inter Milan came from behind to hold Real Sociedad to a 1-1 draw in Group D in San Sebastian.

The tournament debutants stunned last season's runners-up after Brais Mendez fired in on four minutes as defender Alessandro Bastoni had fluffed his lines.

However, the Nerazzurri bounced back with three minutes to go and grabbed a point courtesy of captain Lautaro Martinez.

Braga 1-2 Napoli

Serie A champions Napoli claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Portuguese side Braga and jumped to the top of Group C.

Rudi Garcia's men were ahead on the stroke through Giovani Di Lorenzo, but the host looked to have salvaged a point after Bruma levelled in the closing minutes.

Although, an own-goal in rather miraculous circumstances with two minutes to play from Sikou Niakate helped the Italian champions over the line.

Sevilla 1-1 RC Lens

UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla opened their campaign in Group B with a 1-1 draw against the boys from Ligue 1 RC Lens.

Colombian Lucas Ocampos gave the host the perfect start in the opening ten minutes, but it was cancelled courtesy of a sumptuous free-kick by. Angelo Fulgini.
