African star helps Bayern eliminate PSG

Bayern Munich booked a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-0 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening.

PSG were without Neymar, who will miss the rest of the season, but had Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi up top, while the host banked on former PSG duo Eric Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman in the attack.

The Bavarians were under early pressure from the Ligue 1 giants and needed a smart stop from goalkeeper Yann Sommer to thwart Mbappe's teasing strike.

Bayern pushed after a subdued opening and watched Jamal Musiala collect a pass from Alphonso Davies before he turned away from one challenge and stung the gloves of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Marquinhos didn't look settled ten minutes before from the break and as the match stopped – the Brazilian was removed from the field and Nordi Mukiele replaced him.

The French giants were denied again minutes later when a last-ditch goal-line clearance from Matthijs de Ligt denied Vitinha after the latter robbed Sommer of possession on the edge of the box.

Mukiele, who had come on late in the first half, was removed before the resumption of the second half and had El Chadaille Bitshiabu come on in his place.

Bayern were ahead after 52 minutes through a glancing header by Choupo-Moting in the area following Musiala's cross, but it was overturned for offside by the Video Assistant Review (VAR).

However, Choupo-Moting did put the host ahead nine minutes later as he tapped in a square pass from Leon Goretzka after Marco Verratti conceded possession in a dangerous area.

PSG pushed forward four minutes later and came close from a powerful header by Sergio Ramos off Messi's ball, but he was denied emphatically by Sommer.

The Bundesliga giants remained calm with the minutes ticking away and introduced Joao Cancelo and Serge Gnabry off the substitutes bench.

With a minute to added time, the substitutes combined when Cancelo raced down the right and cutback for Gnabry to dink cleverly over Donnarumma to wrap up the win and seal their spot in the last eight.
