Sterling & Havertz send Chelsea to UCL last 8

Chelsea secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.

Full-backs Reece James and Marc Cucurella were recalled by Blues coach Graham Potter, while Sebastien Haller started in the attack for Dortmund.

The game's first chance fell to the home side on six minutes when Raheem Sterling played in Joao Felix, who skipped past one challenge before being denied by the on-rushing Alexander Meyer.

Dortmund went close with their first effort from a dead-ball situation, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga producing a good save to keep out Marco Reus' curling free-kick on 17 minutes.

The woodwork then came to Dortmund's rescue in ten minutes later, as Kai Havertz pounced on a loose ball and unleashed a volley that cracked the upright with Meyer well-beaten.

Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net through Havertz's impressive finish, but the celebrations were cut short due to Raheem Sterling being offside in the build-up.

Potter's troops were able to break the deadlock three minutes before the interval, with Sterling rifling the ball into the roof of the net after being picked out by Ben Chilwell.

The Blues were presented with a chance to double the lead seven minutes into the second half from the penalty spot but while Havertz missed with the first attempt, he was able to covert on the retake.

Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net for a third time in the 74th minute when Conor Gallager turned home Sterling's low cross, although it was ruled out for another offside on the England international.

Dortmund had a chance to get on the score-sheet with two minutes left in regulation time, but Jude Bellingham failed to steer his header on target from eight yards out as the Blues held out for the 2-0 win on the night, sealing their place in the last eight.

Other result:

Benfica 5-1 Club Brugge (7-1 on aggregate)
