Man City punish Bayern to edge closer to UCL semis

Manchester City put on an impressive display to thrash Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

Bernardo Silva came in for Riyad Mahrez as Man City's only change from the win at Southampton on Saturday, while City loanee Joao Cancelo started on the bench for the visiting side.

The Citizens took control of possession in the early stages and managed to carve out a chance on eight minutes when Kevin de Bruyne sent a cross into the box for Ilkay Gündogan, who headed over.

The in-form Erling Haaland was presented with his first chance on 21 minutes when a neat passing move ended with Jack Grealish teeing up the Norwegian, who could only fire straight at Yann Sommer.

Sommer picked the ball out of his own net six minutes later when Rodri opened the scoring for the home side with a lovely curling left-footed strike from distance that sailed into the top corner.

While Bayern failed to trouble City goalkeeper Ederson, Sommer was called upon once again minutes before the break after pulling off a save at point-blank range to keep out Gündogan's shot.

The second half got off to a lively start as former City winger Leroy Sane was sipped through on goal three minutes but was denied by Ederson, while Sommer produced a finger-tip save to keep out Bruno Dias' header moments later.

Both coaches looked to their bench on 68 minutes as Pep Guardiola withdrew De Bruyne for Julian Alvarez, while Sadio Mane replaced Jamal Musaila for the German champions.

City would go on to double their lead minutes later when Jack Grealish won the ball high up and set Haaland free down the left. The Norwegian, instead of shooting, sent a ball to the far post where Silva was on hand to head home.

Haaland was not to be left outfit as the Norwegian wrapped up the scoring on 77 minutes with a volley from close range after getting on the end of John Stones' knockdown.
