Zungu, 28, was heavily criticised by prominent figures of the Scottish giants after being 'removed' from the first-team squad to quarantine upon breaking Covid-19 regulations.
The Bafana Bafana star along with three younger players were duly punished and could face a lengthy ban from the Scottish Premier League but after coming out with a public apology, he returned to the first-team squad last night.
The on-loan midfielder featured in the final ten minutes of their 5-2 win against Jupiler Pro League side Antwerp as they ran 9-5 winners on aggregate to advance to the last-16 stage of the competition.
Speaking after the game in the post-match press conference, he addressed the return of Zungu and the two other players.
"They have been punished internally, spoken and treated internally and we all want them to learn from that moving forward," Gerrard said. "The sooner you can move on from there, the better."
The former Liverpool captain who was full of praise for 19-year-old Nathan Patterson, in particular, went on to tell BT Sport that he felt they needed a second chance to redeem themselves after the recent media storm.
"As a person with four children myself, I want to be the one who gives people a second chance," he explained.
"I myself made the same mistake as a human being, so he [Nathan Patterson] Then learn and he has to take a little more punishment to come his way.
"It's true for three people, but it's a whirlwind week and hopefully, they'll help them grow."
