Arsenal bowed out of the UEFA Europa League following a 5-3 loss on penalties to Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night.
Having come off the bench against Fulham, the Gunners started Gabriel Jesus for the first time since his injury at last year's FIFA World Cup and named Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka on the bench
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was required to make a substitution eight minutes in as a knock forced Takehiro Tomiyasu off, with former Brighton Hove Albion defender Ben White entering the pitch.
The move didn't affect them nine minutes later this after a ball by Reiss Nelson met Jesus whose first-time shot at the far post steered a diving stop off goalkeeper Antonio Adan.
Although, the host were ahead five minutes later where Grant Xhaka latched on a spilled shot that Adan parried back in play and angled in the far corner.
Another enforced alteration was needed for the Premier League leaders just after seizing the lead and saw William Saliba removed for Rob Holding.
Jesus didn't come out for the second half and was replaced by Trossard, whilst the visitors pushed for the equaliser following halftime with six-yard entries.
Sporting drew level in style on 62 minutes where Pedro Goncalves retrieved possession in midfield, spotted goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale off the line and dinked in from way out.
The Gunners were on the ropes ten minutes later and needed a superb save from point-blank range by Ramsdale to thwart London-born Marcos Edwards profiting from close-range.
As the match ticked away, both sides looked for the winner though neither were able to find it and to extra-time the match went.
Sporting lived dangerously on 97 minutes and allowed Trossard to intercept to go clean through before he fired in off Adan and against the post.
Adan came up trumps for the visitors with two outstanding saves in quick succession from a header by Gabriel Magalhaes and snap-shot by Saka later on.
The Portuguese outfit were reduced to ten-men two minutes to full-time with Manuel Ugarte dismissed for a second bookable offence after fouling Saka, and off the penalties the match went.
Adan was at it again during the shoot-out as he saved Gabriel Martinelli's spot-kick before Nuno Santos turned in the winning kick to send Sporting to the last eight.
