WATCH: Fan runs on to pitch, attacks player!

Controversy ensued when a fan ran on to the pitch and punched a goalkeeper during a UEFA Europa League clash on Thursday night.

Towards the end of Sevilla's 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of their UEL round of 32 tie, a supporter ran on to the field and approached Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.

Soon after coming face to face with the goalkeeper, the fan threw a punch at the shot-stopper, with Dmitrovic responding by returning the favour before pushing the man, believed to be a PSV supporter, to the ground.

The goalkeeper then held the pitch invader down before teammates and opposition players came to his aid, with security arriving soon after to remove him from the pitch.

Here is the shocking incident:

In a post-match press conference, the LaLiga side's manager Jorge Sampaoli was livid about what had transpired.

"What happened today seems very serious to me," the head coach said, per SPORTBible.

"I don't know the type of sanction I should have taken, because it should have been more severe. It is incredibly sad that this has happened. I find it worrying; this type of thing needs to stop.

"We need to work together to ensure it does. This cannot happen again in the future."

Goalkeeper Dmitrovic has also broken his silence on the shocking incident.

"He came and pushed me from behind," the 31-year-old said, per the Daily Mirror.

"He was probably angry about the result and a bit crazy already.

"He tried to hit me and I managed to grab him and wait for him to security will arrive.

"It's never nice to see this in football, it shouldn't happen, and from now on I hope these things are well punished."

Despite losing the match, Sevilla still qualified for the UEL's round of 16 after beating PSV 3-0 in the first leg to secure a 3-2 aggregate win.
