Lewandowski denies France top spot at Euros

France 1-1 Poland

France dropped to second spot in Group D in the 2024 European Championship after a 1-1 draw with Poland in Dortmund on Tuesday evening

Kylian Mbappe was back in the line-up and partnered Bradley Barcola following the goalless draw against Netherlands, as Antoine Griezmann and Marcus Thuram dropped.

The Poles, who had all-time top-scorer Robert Lewandowski, had nothing to play for having been already eliminated from the tournament.

No goals were able to come about post the opening half proceedings, as matters though not for a lack of attempts concluded goalless.

Les Blues were up and running following the break and the heroics between the sticks for Lukasz Skorupski managed to keep Mbappe in particular at bay.

Nonetheless, the French got their just rewards ten minutes from the resumption when Mbappe tucked in from the penalty spot after Jakub Kiwior tumbled down Ousmane Dembele.

Poland maintained cool bit of heads as the clock beckoned and light appeared at the end of the tunnel as Lewandowski netted from the spot following a coming-together.

Netherlands 2-3 Austria

Austria booked their spot in the last 16 as Group D winners thrilling victory over the Netherkands

Dutch manager Ronald Koeman featured a number of fringe players, with Xavi Simons, Jeremie Frimpong and influential captain Virgil Van Dijk headlining the starting stall.

A slice of good fortunate made way to the Austrians, who hit the front just after kick-off when Donyell Malen looked to clear a cross but ended up finding his own net.

Liverpool forward Coady Gakpo brought matters back on even terms right and arrowed in a well-taken volley that gave Patrick Pentz no chance.

However, it was very short-lived this as a fast-paced move to the other end of the field led to a cross which Romano Schmid retrieved to head in the bottom-corner.

The Dutch pulled level yet again in the latter periods when a knockdown by Wout Weghorst picked out Memphis Depay who finished with ease.

Austria did have the final say to it all and saw Marcel Sabitzer made an impressive stretch from the area and volleyed in the roof of the net.

The Austrians survived the late storm from the Dutch and went to top of the group ahead of the more fancied France and self-same Netherlands, who advance as one of the best third-place teams.
