France send Belgium crashing out of EUROs

France progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship after securing a 1-0 win over Belgium on Monday evening.

There were minimal alterations from the France, as Marcus Thuram and Antoine Griezmann returned from the draw with Poland while Lois Openda and Yannick Carrasco came in for the Belgians' alterations.

Griezmann looked to make a telling impact on ten minutes played after embarking a sharp turn outside the area to get a shot away, but Koen Casteels parried.

Les Bleus still enjoyed most of the chances and had Thuram go wide of the head following a pin-point supply by fullback Jules Kounde.

Yet another opportunity went the way of the French late in the half whereby a string of passes led Aurelien Tchouameni to grab possession and fired wide of the mark.

Tchouameni again managed to get a chance in the opening five minutes of the second half and on this particular occasion drew a finger-tip off Casteels after launching a curling strike.

France once more looked promising minutes apart and saw captain Kylian Mbappe go on the charge to hold off a few challengers including Kevin De Bruyne before steering wide.

Les Bleus decided to refresh the on-field contingent just inside the midway point and introduced Randal Kolo Muani in place of Inter Milan forward Thuram.

The Red Devils were able to get out of their shelve after a quiet spell and drew Mike Maignan to a save following a teasing attempt by Romelu Lukaku.

However, Les Bleus stole the victory in five minutes from time when Kolo Muani managed to get in the area to get a shot away and fired off Jan Vertonghen who unfortunately found his own net.

The Red Devils were unable to launch a response and sadly succumbed to defeat to exit the tournament in the last 16.
