Germany open EUROs with Scotland thrashing

Germany ran riot in the opening game at the 2024 European Championship with a 5-1 thrashing of Scotland on Friday night.

No changes were made by Die Mannschaft from the friendly win over Greece, whereas Manchester United's Scott McTominay and Southampton striker Che Adams returned for the Scots.

The first goal of the tournament came ten minutes on the clock as Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz gained a smart cross-field pass from Joshua Kimmich and bundled in off the foot of the post.

Scotland were thorn to shreds once more eight minutes apart after Jamal Musiala managed to open his body after stepping into the box and slammed in the top corner off Kai Havertz's pass.

Matters continued going against Scotland who conceded a penalty for a foul on Havertz, but fortunately enough it was overturned for a free-kick that didn't yield any results.

The Scots weren't out of the woods but witnessed Ryan Porteous receive a red-card for a foul on Ilkay Gundogan on the cusp of halftime and conceded a penalty which Havertz buried.

Substitutions from either team were made before the start of the second half where Pascal Grob replaced Robert Andrich for Germany before Scotland withdrew Adams for Grant Hanley.

The Scottish continued to play second fiddle and remained susceptible to chances as a first-time volley by Wirtz at the back-post put Angus Gunn to work.

Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, who had come on as a substitute came in from the blind-side and drifted in-field to attempt a near post finish but Gunn repelled.

Die Mannschaft bagged a fourth midway through the second half when Niclas Fullkrug latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and smashed in the top corner to give them a fourth.

The host nation were keen to add more despite the already healthy cushion and a looping header from close-range by Fullkrug bounced off Gunn on-route to the net, but it was disallowed for offside.

Scotland earned a consolation three minutes ahead of fulltime when Antonio Rudiger aided Scott McKenna's goal-bound header from a free-kick past Manuel Neuer.

Die Mannschaft responded in additional time as Emre Can gained possession on the edge of the box and comfortably picked out the bottom-corner.

That were the last piece of action, with the final whistle blown to see the host nation off to a flying start in the tournament.
