Denmark pegged back by Slovenia

Denmark were unable to start the 2024 European Championship with a win after playing to a 1-1 draw against Slovenia on Sunday evening.

David Brekalo dropped out for Vanja Drkusic before Tomi Horvat made way for Petar Stojanovic in Slovenia's changes, with Christian Eriksen and Jonas Wind starting ahead of Andreas Skov Olsen and Mikkel Damsgaard on the side of the Danes.

After a tense start, the Danish were in the ascendancy in the opening quarter-hour of the match after Eriksen managed to come in on the near side and banged in the far corner.

Slovenia banked on star man Benjamin Sesko for inspiration, but the Danes were keen to extend matters and saw Jannik Vestergaard go agonizingly wide from a corner-kick.

With the first half winding down, Eriksen threatened a brace following another layoff by Wind but steered over on this particular occasion.

Forward Andraz Sprorar came extremely close to levelling matters a few minutes after halftime where he mis-timed a delivery across the face of the penalty area.

Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund could've made it two past 60 minutes played with a tap from Victor Kristiansen's cross, but Jan Oblak rushed out and parried.

It was nearly a costly miss as Slovenia targeted the equaliser minutes apart when a looping header from Adam Gnezda Cerin rolled narrowly past the bottom-corner.

The Dragons continued to come forward and had Sesko charge towards the area and rattle the upright, with the Danes pinned back.

Denmark were undone though in the closing quarter when Erik Janza capitalised on a floated ball to the far post and volleyed beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

As both sides pushed for the winner towards full-time, the match unfortunately finished on even terms in the opening tie in Group C.
