Spain run riot over Georgia for quarter-final spot

Spain thrashed Georgia 4-1 to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship on Sunday evening.

Former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte was the only survivor from Spain's win over Albania, with Georgia making no changes to the team that started the impressive win over Portugal.

Spain, who enjoyed a dominant opening, trailed when a ball in by Otar Kakabadze ended with Robin Le Normand bundling the ball into his own net.

La Roja earnestly searched for a response a little later as Fabian Ruiz pulled wide to get hold of Rodri's lofted pass to hit on the volley, but goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made a stop.

The two-time champions were back on level terms five minutes to the break when a reverse pass on the edge of the area by Nico Williams picked out Rodri to finish calmly on the edge of the box.

At the same time, Georgia were called to make a substitution after Otar Kiteishvili pulled up due to an injury and saw Sandro Altunashvili come on in his place.

In the second half, Georgia looked to regain advantage through a smart forward run from star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia but he ended going wide of the mark.

Spain proved more decisive over five minutes past the interval and went ahead after Ruiz made a blind-run to the back-post and nodded in the near post following Lamine Yamal's cross.

La Roja grabbed total control well inside the final quarter as Williams made a telling run to the right inside-channel and fired in the roof of the net for the third goal.

It didn't end there for the Spanish who nabbed a fourth goal over ten minutes to full-time when Dani Olmo picked up Oyarzabal's layoff and curled beyond the outstretched Mamardashvili.

Spain were comfortable victors in the end despite having to come from behind and marched onto the quarter-finals.
