Germany eliminate Denmark for Last 8 spot

Germany sealed their ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship with a 2-0 win over Denmark on Saturday evening.

Three changes by Germany coacj Julian Nagelsmann saw David Raum, Nico Schlotterbeck and Leroy Sane coming in for Maximilian Mittelstadt, Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz while, Thomas Delaney and Skov Olsen returned  for the Danes.

Die Mannschaft hit the opener on three minutes after Schlotterback ran onto a floated delivery to head in the near post, but a foul in the build-up saw the strike ruled out.

That didn't dampen their mood as three minutes apart Joshua Kimmich stepped up a few yards and unleashed a powerful drive that forced Kasper Schmeichel to solid reflexes.

Adverse weather conditions forced the referee Michael Oliver to call a brief halt on the contest, with neither side in the ascendancy.

Minutes past the resumption, Die Mannschaft continued on the attack and a point-blank save from Schmeichel repelled a free header from Kai Havertz.

It was a busy opening in the second half where the Danes had the lead through Joachim Andersen's snap shot, but his joy was spoiled and disallowed for offside after a review.

His fortunes turned upside down less than a minute and conceded a penalty after he brushed a cross from Raum with his hand following a review by Oliver, and saw Havertz fire in the bottom-corner.

The Arsenal ace should've bagged a brace in the space of minutes when he surged away unchecked off a forward pass, but dinked narrowly wide.

Germany did increase the tally midway through the half after a delivery in the wide channel set Jamal Musiala on his way and the highly-rated youngster charged to finish comfortably.

Wirtz turned out in the latter stages for Die Mannschaft and took the place of Musiala, with the Danes utterly on the back-foot.

The Bayer Leverkusen man seemed to have made it three with a smart effort from close-range, but it wasn't awarded and was ruled out for offside.

Die Mannschaft didn't have to bother though but had already done more than enough to wrap up the win to advance to the quarter-finals.
