Spain end Germany's EURO 2024 dream

Spain advanced to the European Championship semi-finals following a 2-1 victory over Germany in extra-time on Friday evening.

No changes were made by La Roja after the 4-1 win over Georgia, but Germany went for two from the win against Denmark in Jonathan Tah for Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can in favour of Robert Andrich.

La Roja were thrown into disarray eight minutes gone where an injury required FC Barcelona teen sensation Pedri to vacate and grant Dani Olmo on from the substitutes bench.

Olmo didn't take time to get stuck in but stood over a free-kick just moments from entering and a certain Lamine Yamal snapped narrowly past the goal of Manuel Neuer.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, who have been one of the stars of the tournament, looked to lighten up the Germans quest late in the half through a solo move but couldn't beat shot-stopper Unai Simon.

Following a rather even first half, substitutions were made by either side as Germany introduced Florian Wirtz for Leroy Sane and Andrich for Can before Nacho replaced Robin Le Normand.

Spain were in the driving seat five minutes from the interval when Yamal got down the right and crossed for Olmo to drill in the bottom-corner at the first time of asking.

La Roja shot-stopepr Simon was called to action in the final stages and got down to steer Andrich's first-time effort behind following Niclas Fullkrug's knockdown.

Fullkrug aimed to better when he managed to get behind Nacho following a surging run, but hit the upright aiding to the frustration of the host.

Germany were rewarded a minute to the end after Joshua Kimmich showed the presence of mind to play a knockdown into the path of Wirtz to finish comfortably.

With the tie level and no winner in regulation, extra-time were the next route to determine who between these protagonists advance to the last four.

A very tight but laboured first exchanges of the additional period showed in which neither really opened up and were kept relatively at bay.

La Roja, though, had the last laugh in the final minute when Mikel Merino pounced on a cross by Olmo and applied a thumping header that gave Neuer no chance.

There was a sour end for Spain after Dani Carvajal saw red for a coming-together, as La Roja emerged victorious and into the semi-finals with Germany eliminated.
