MILESTONE: Ronaldo reaches 900 goals

Portugal 2-1 Croatia

Portugal made a winning start to move to the top of the League A Group 1 standings in the Nations League following a 2-1 victory over Croatia.

Renowned captain Cristiano Ronaldo spearheaded the home side's forward line and was accompanied by Rafael Leao and new Chelsea man Pedro Neto, with the tireless Luka Modric in midfield for the Vatreni.

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot broke the deadlock on seven minutes with a well-crafted finish to hand the home team the lead.

Ronaldo stepped up to the plate shortly ahead of halftime and extended their lead through a fine effort that gave Dominik Livakovic no chance whatsoever, bringing up his 900th career goal.

However, Dalot in particular didn't cover himself in glory a minute to the interval when he bundled an attempted clearance off into his own net and gave the visitors a lifeline.

No further danger came on the home team though following the remainder of the clash and secured a rather hard-fought victory in the end.

Serbia 0-0 Spain

European champions Spain drew blanks against a stubborn Serbia in a League A Group 4 opening clash in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.

The champions of Europe named the recently returned Pedri to the substitutes bench, but nonetheless still rolled out a stern eleven comprising of Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo in particular.

Despite the chances either side enjoyed in both halves, neither managed to hit target and evidently settled for a point apiece.

Scotland 2-3 Poland

Poland surged to the top of League A Group 1 following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Scotland out in Glasgow.

In-form FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski as ever picked out the Poles starting eleven, with new Napoli signing Billy Gilmour lining up at the other end.

A strong start saw the Poles in the lead after eight minutes through Sebastian Szymanski after the Scots struggled to get their lines in order.

Lewandowski – known for his prowess in front of goal continued on the pathway a minute before halftime when he finished off from the penalty spot after a foul in the area.

The Scots did though get a lifeline a minute in the second half with Gilmour finding target and saw his new club mate Scott McTominay add another to level matters later on.

Although, Poland didn't drop their heads but rallied on and grabbed victory in the dying minutes through Nicola Zalewski.

Denmark 2-0 Switzerland

Denmark enjoyed a positive start to the new campaign in League A Group 4 with a late 2-0 victory over Switzerland, who didn't finish the match with a full complement of players.

The Swiss were reduced to ten players over ten minutes in the second stanza when Nico Elvedi got his marching orders for a coming-together that didn't please the officiating team.

After a pretty even outing, the Danes pushed ahead inside the remaining ten minutes through Patrick Dorgu and made sure of the points when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg bagged a second in added time.
