UEFA Nations League match report Portugal v France

Les Bleus manager Didier Deschamps brought back the big guns after a second-string side hammered Ukraine 7-1, with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kante recalled.

After a goalless draw against Spain, Portugal made wholesale changes, with big names such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix returning to support captain Cristiano Ronaldo upfront.

After a slow start, the visitors had the first good chance midway into the first stanza after Silva threaded a through ball for Ronaldo inside the box but Lucas Hernandez made a crucial block to deny the Juventus forward a volleyed shot.

Fernando Santos' charges had another wonderful chance to break the deadlock with nine minutes left of the first stanza after Fernandes whipped in a dangerous cross but Felix could not direct his effort on goal with an out-stretched shot.

The sides were quick off the mark coming from the break and Mbappe had a great chance just two minutes inside the second stanza after bursting clear inside the box but his goal-bound shot was parried away by shot-stopper Rui Patricio.

However, clear chances were hard to come by, with the defences not giving anything away which resulted in Santos making his first change on the hour-mark by bringing on Diogo Jota in place of Silva.

Pepe thought he had put Portugal ahead with 16 minutes left after a great diving header past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from a free-kick at the back post but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The game was still on the edge in the closing minutes and Ronaldo almost snatched the winner for the visitors in stoppage time but his thumping striike at the back post was smothered by Lloris as the sides shared the spoils in the end.
