Rangnick names 6 stars, incl. Haaland, Man Utd refused to sign

Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has revealed that the club turned down his request to sign six stars, including Erling Haaland and Luis Diaz, during his time with the Red Devils.

The Austria head coach took charge of the Red Devils after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021.

It was initially expected that Rangnick would be the team's manager on an interim basis before becoming a consultant for the club at the end of last season.

However, that arrangement was short-lived as both parties decided to part ways after a disastrous campaign in which United recorded their lowest number of points (58) in the Premier League era.

The EPL giants then hired Erik ten Hag as their head coach, and allowed him to spend €240.32 million (R5 billion) on new players in the most recent transfer window.

That amount in transfer fees might not sit well with Rangnick, who has now revealed that United rejected the chance to sign six high-profile stars during his time at Old Trafford.

"There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club," the 64-year-old told German outlet BILD.

"But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

"That's why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

"We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market.

"But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach."

Haaland went on to join Manchester City, while Luis Diaz has become a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side.

Christopher Nkunku is reportedly close to joining Chelsea, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming a deal has already been agreed in principle, while Gvardiol has also been linked with a move to the Blues.

Dusan Vlahovic, meanwhile, ended up joining Juventus, while Alvaro Morata returned to Atletico Madrid following his two-year loan spell with the Bianconeri.
