The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner was initially named by manager Didier Deschamps in Les Bleus' tournament squad before suffering an injury to his left thigh during a training session in Doha.

After undergoing an MRI scan, it was confirmed that Benzema had suffered a muscle tear that would need three weeks of recovery time.
According to Onda Madrid, however, Benzema has almost fully recovered from the injury just nine days after first feeling the pain in his thigh, with RMC Sport reporting that he could now be called back into the squad ahead of the knockout stages of the World Cup.

FIFA rules allow players to return to their national team if they recover from an injury that initially stopped them from playing, which only applies if they were named in the final squad, a criteria Benzema satisfies.
It is said the decision on a recall now lies in the hands of the forward and manager Deschamps, who will assess whether or not the footballer can contribute to their fight to retain their world title in Qatar.
