Argentina's parade suspended after fan jumps off bridge

Argentina had to suspend their 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy parade in Buenos Aires after proceedings descended into chaos when a fan tried to jump on to the open-top bus from a bridge and fell to the ground instead.

There were reportedly more than four million in attendance as Argentina fans took to the streets of the country's capital on Tuesday to celebrate the Albiceleste's World Cup victory and see captain Lionel Messi and the team parade their new trophy.

The streets were packed after the government had announced that the winners' homecoming from Qatar had been declared a public holiday.

However, the event was cut short due to safety concerns after two fans risked their lives by attempting to jump into the open-top bus carrying the players from a bridge.

According to the Daily Metro, the first person jumped successfully in to the vehicle after ignoring warnings from the players, but the second man mistimed his leap and hit the back of the bus before falling to the road.

This resulted in security officials taking the decision to call a premature stop to the parade, with the players being taken back to the national team's training base by a helicopter.

The parade was initially supposed to take place over 18 miles and finish at the Obelisco de Buenos Aires.

The head of emergency medical services in Buenos Aires, Alberto Crescenti, has confirmed there were at least eight injuries during the parade.

"So far, we have eight injured, some with arm and leg fractures, due to climbing traffic lights and different places where one should not climb," the medical professional said, per the Daily Metro.

Crescenti also revealed that another 340 people were injured during celebrations after the final on Sunday evening.
