Kaizer Chiefs secured their spot in the next round of the Nedbank Cup after defeating ten-man Maritzburg United 2-0 in extra-time on Friday night.
Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane handed a first start to Christian Saile Basomboli and re-called Zitha Kwinika, whilst Maritzburg dropped goalkeeper Leander Renaldo and started King Ndlovu.
During an energetic opening, the Team of Choice were the first to pose a threat after a smart shot from close-range by Kwame Peprah forced goalkeeper Brandon Peterson to parry for a corner.
The Team of Choice went close again just past the half-hour mark after a curler outside the area from Peprah forced a flying one-hand save out of Peterson.
A little thereafter, the host were down to ten men as a rash challenge by Travis Graham on Shabalala resulted in a second yellow card as the midfielder's evening came to an early end.
Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davdis was forced to make changes and brought on Lungelo Bhengu for Tebogo Tlolane before Jose Ali Meza came out for Keegan Ritchie.
Chiefs got a promising chance on the stroke of halftime when a curling strike from outside the area by Ashley Du Preez forced Ndlovu to steer out for a corner-kick.
Amakhosi coach Arthur Zwane added a substitution at the start of the second half as Wandile Duba came on to replace fellow attacking midfielder Shabalala.
Maritzburg regained courage after a quiet start to the second half in the midway stage and saw Peterson produce a stunning one-hand stop to thwart Rowan Human's fierce effort from distance.
With Maritzburg camped in their own half, the Amakhosi pushed for the opener and went close through the likes of Du Preez, Kgaogelo Sekgota but neither player were able to profit, which ultimately sent the game to extra-time.
The Amakhosi made their dominant display count a minute in extra-time after Basomboli pounced on an error by Ndlovu from Kwinika's cross and bundled in from close-range.
Maritzburg threatened to draw level minutes in the second period of extra-time after Amadou Soukouna dropped in space outside the area and fired against the foot of the post.
Zwane's men made the result safe in the 113th minute when Du Preez got out at the back-post and side-footed in Happy Mashiane's cross past Ndlovu for his fourth goal of the season.
