Barcelona boss: Why I met with Lionel Messi's agent

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed why he recently met up with Lionel Messi's agent.

Earlier in February, it was reported that Barca had initiated talks to re-sign the Argentine, whose contract at Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire at the end of this campaign.

It was said the LaLiga giants were keen to sign the club legend on a free transfer, while it was also suggested that Laporta and Messi's agent, his father Jorge Messi, were discussing a way the club could celebrate the player, including a potential statue outside the Camp Nou.

Laporta has now revealed that the meeting did, in fact, take place, and explained what was discussed.

"We [he and Jorge Messi] have seen each other," the Barca chief confirmed, per Mundo Deportivo

"I congratulated him for Argentina's World Cup victory.

"We are talking about a tribute match for Leo, who has extraordinary affection for Barca."

Laporta was also asked about the possibility of Messi returning to Catalonia, but the Blaugrana executive refused to speak on the player's future.

"He's at PSG right now, so I don't want to speak about whether or not he could return," the 60-year-old added.

"Leo's thing isn't about money, we're talking about a tribute."
