Man Utd's 'worst player' hits back at critics

A Manchester United star has hit back at critics after being labelled "the club's worst player".

Contrary to last season, only a few United players have drawn serious criticism from the media this campaign amid the club's improved performances under manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch boss has also supplemented his squad with eight new faces in the two transfer windows he has had so far, including Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, and Marcel Sabitzer.

However, two of those new arrivals have consistently been on the receiving end of criticism from pundits and former players, namely Antony and Wout Weghorst.

The latter arrived in January on a six-month loan deal from English Championship outfit Burnley, as the club needed a striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the recurring injuries of Anthony Martial.

A return of just two goals in 18 games from the striker has seen him receive fierce backlash from Red Devils icons Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel, who have questioned his quality to play for the side, while sports broadcaster Richard Keys called the Netherlands star the club's "worst player".

While on international duty with the Netherlands, Weghorst has since addressed his critics, insisting that he must doing something right to continue being picked.

"I've played a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me. It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team," said the 30-tear-old, according to Metro.

"That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies.

"We have one now. We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League.

"So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, that's a good thing."
