Sundowns' Sirino has his say on Bafana call-up

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Gaston Sirino has added his voice a debate around the possibly of representing Bafana Bafana since he now has South African citizenship.

The Uruguayan maestro got the nod for South African citizenship at the end of January this year after completing five years in South African and therefore became eligible to represent the South African national team.

Since the news, the topic has been a hotly-contested one, considering as the playmaker's attributes and Bafana Bafana looking to stamp their authority at next year's AFCON.

"I have had a great time in this beautiful country, I love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colors I would jump at the opportunity," Sirino told Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine.

"but the decision does not rest with me. There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana and if I receive the call, I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation."

Sirino has made 18 appearances this season, contribution three goals and four assists. His call-up to Bafana would not be as atypical and some might imagine, when as many as 136 players who featured at the 2022 World Cup represented countries that are not of their birth.

Sirino is also understood to be using registered with his South African passport for this season's CAF Champions League , in which Sundowns are set to take on Coton Sport on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld.
